If the stone is stained, it is possible to clean it using a slightly abrasive cleaning paste, designed for this use. We recommend that you test it on a non-visible area before cleaning the whole stone.

Soapstone:

  • To fix small scratches is possible to use a soft pencil and a dry cloth:
    • With the pencil, gently ”pigment” the scratch. Alternatively, it is possible to powder the pencil lead core over the scratch.
    • Use the dry cloth to spread the pencil pigment evenly in and round the scratch. This should blend the pigment with the stone natural color and cover the scratch.

Limestone:

  • It is possible to remove some light stains from limestone with this old method:
    • Soak some white, clean paper with distilled water and mash it into a muddy pulp.
    • Spread the pulp over the stain. The water in the paper pulp should penetrate the stone and melt the stain, and then be absorbed again by the drying of the paper removing it for good.
    • Remove the paper only when completely dry. Clean off any residue with a dry cloth.

Before using the stove, make sure that the stone is completely dry. To do so, heat the stove very gently with a small load of wood and set the stove to minimum power. If the stone is still wet when firing the stove to full power, the moisture can damage the stone or stove.

Please notice: Always test your detergents before use and use only special limestone detergents to clean the stones.
